Celebrating the little details of life through pattern and paint.

Celebrating the little details of life through pattern and paint.

Mikaela Bernhardt of Mikaela Karthik Design is a mural artist, placemaker, and surface pattern designer based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Growing up as an only child, whenever Mikaela complained to her mom that she was bored, her response was always the same: "I'm glad you're bored ~ go be creative." At the time, this was not the answer Mikaela was looking for (TV was far more appealing), but now she is eternally grateful for it. That consistent nudge shaped who she is over the years and heavily contributed to the creative she is today.

Her style evokes a delicate sense of calm with a bold sense of playfulness. Other words people have used to describe her recognizable art style are earthy, intricate, organic, elegant, and unique. She draws inspiration from mindful moments, botanicals, global travel and culture, her husband's South Indian heritage, abstract expression, and her background in landscape architecture.

Mikaela is available for custom hand-painted mural work, signage and lettering, art licensing, seamless pattern designs, brand collaborations, and illustration.

When Mikaela isn't creating, you can find her sipping coffee at a local Berkeley coffee shop, reading true crime novels, dancing at The Dance Floor in Albany, and cooking nourishing, nutrient-dense meals.

I want to make your space a place.

Custom hand painted murals for commercial and residential spaces. Always designed to elevate atmosphere, strengthen brand identity, and celebrate community.

  • It’s rare to find someone who has such excellent artistry combined with high-quality administrative and business skills! I loved my experience with Mikaela. Everything from the design process through implementation was done with such care.

  • I can’t even describe how much I love my bedroom mural. Photos don’t do it justice. It’s absolutely beautiful. She brought my vision to life with multiple sketches and in person meetings to iterate together. Her creativity to bring together something so intangible that fit my style is absolutely incredible.

  • We recently had the pleasure of collaborating with Mikaela Bernhardt of Mikaela Karthik Design to reimagine the main entrance of our Sunnyvale location. The transformation has been nothing short of spectacular. Her design infused a warm and authentic South Indian aesthetic that beautifully reflects our roots and vision.
